The ingredients needed to make Green Lentil Dahl:
  1. Take 2 x 400g tins of green lentils in water
  2. Make ready 1 x 400g tin of chopped tomatoes
  3. Take 200 ml coconut milk
  4. Make ready 1 finely chopped red onion
  5. Make ready 1 thumb of finely chopped ginger
  6. Get 2 tsp ground cumin
  7. Make ready 1 tsp ground garam masala
  8. Take 1 tsp ground paprika
  9. Get 1 tsp ground turmeric
  10. Take 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  11. Get 1 handful fresh chopped coriander

  4. Drain the lentils and add them to the pan, along with the coconut milk and a healthy pinch of salt. Put a lid on the pan, reduce the heat and leave to cook for at least an hour on a low heat, stirring occasionally
  5. With the lid on the water will remain in the pan but ideally you want a nice thick dahl, so remove the lid, increase the heat back to medium and reduce the liquid in the dahl to your liking (being careful to stir occasionally to avoid burning)
  6. To serve, sprinkle the rest of the coriander over the top. I generally prefer bread over rice as an accompaniment but both work well, if you like some spice it's a good chance to add some fresh chill, I've also found that a squeeze of lime works really well in this dish
